Residents of 20 localities of Falesti district benefit from policing services in a friendly and accessible space after the modernization of the police station no. 4 in Egorovca, carried out with the support of the U.S. Government and UNDP.
The building, located at the central road of Egorovca and the national road R16 Chisinau-Falesti, has over 270 square meters and is organized according to the principles of community policing. It is accessible to all beneficiaries, including people with disabilities and older people, and has a multi-purpose room for community activities and information meetings with citizens. At the same time, better working conditions are provided for the 10 police employees, as the building is equipped with a kitchen, shower cabin, locker room, etc. There are playgrounds for children both inside and near the police station.
“Dear colleagues, police officers, now you have a modern workplace, a friendly, visible and easily accessible to citizens police station. This implies even more responsibility, and the policing services you provide should become even more qualitative, so as to react promptly to citizens’ needs,” said Ana Revenco, Minister of Internal Affairs, at the opening ceremony of the police station.
With the support of the U.S. Government and UNDP, the police officers have been trained to better understand and apply the concept of community policing, which requires increased communication capabilities, friendlier and inclusive infrastructure and a more strategic approach to crime prevention.
The training program included modules such as: criminology and crime prevention, tools and methods used in community policing, methods of identifying and solving security problems, etc.
“The purpose of community policing is to serve the public in true partnership that reflects the needs of its citizens. This matters because police are one of the main arms of government, that citizens interact with on a regular basis. It is essential in a strong, democratic country, to build constructive, respectful relationships between citizens and the police who protect them,” noted Jim Kulikowski, Coordinator of U.S. Assistance to Europe and Eurasia, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, U.S. Department of State.
The implementation of the concept of community policing contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 16, "Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels".
“With the proximity to the citizen and community, the Police is one of the first responders on behalf of the state in various situations. The modernization of Police and its capacities to engage with the communities is crucial for the systemic safety, security and well-being of residents,” noted Dima Al-Khatib, UNDP Resident Representative to the Republic of Moldova.
The Police of the Republic of Moldova have a long-lasting collaboration with the U.S. Government and UNDP, during which various activities were carried out to strengthen institutional and professional capacities of police to ensure a safe environment for all men and women in the Republic of Moldova and increase people’s trust in police.
Previously, with the support of UNDP and the U.S. Government, three other police stations across the country were modernized – no. 3 from Buiucani/Chisinau municipality (2017), no. 1 from Singerei (2018) and no. 1 from Cahul (2021).
