Preserving Libya’s Cultural Treasures

Preserving Libya’s Cultural Treasures
June 30, 2025
Cultural landmarks in Libya, whether Greek ruins, Roman theatres, Ottoman palaces, or desert medinas, are not just relics of the past. They are living symbols of community pride and continuity. In places that have experienced conflict and division, restoring these sites is also a way to restore connection, between people, generations, and place. UNDP has been a partner to the people of Libya since 1976.
In 2009, we supported the rehabilitation of the Old City of Ghadames, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in one of our earliest and proudest contributions to heritage preservation. This work laid the foundation for deeper engagement, reaffirming that heritage is not only a cultural asset, but a driver of social cohesion, livelihoods, and shared recovery.
