March 6, 2019

On February 28, 2019 UNDP took part in the workshop “Green Economy in Kazakhstan” organized by the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan and UN Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE).

During the meeting, participants shared latest developments, programs, and initiatives related to green development taking place in Kazakhstan. They also identified key green development priorities, policy processes and areas of interventions for the Government of Kazakhstan.

Enhancing the share of renewables in the energy matrix, increasing energy and resource efficiency, ensuring access and efficient use of water, and enhancing the productivity of the agriculture sector are some of the key development objectives set in Strategy 2050.

The Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) aims to put sustainability at the heart of economic policymaking. PAGE brings the combined mandate, expertise and networks of different UN agencies, able to support member countries’ inclusive green economy initiatives by providing policy advice, assessment and evaluation tools.

In July 2018, Kazakhstan became one of the newest countries to join PAGE. The transition of the Republic of Kazakhstan to green economy identifies the way to ensure long-term growth based on climate friendly technologies, measures to improve energy efficiency and to restore, as well as sustainably manage, natural resources. PAGE aims to work with Ministry of Energy and other partners to support efforts by the Government of Kazakhstan to advance green economy in key priority areas.

Vice-Minister of Energy, Sabit Nurlybay, confirmed Kazakhstan’s commitment and interest in this new initiative and readiness to work in close collaboration with the PAGE agencies.
