“Green” development of Zhambyl region discussed at the meeting with UNDP

Today, UNDP Resident Representative a.i., Sukhrob Khojimatov met with the Akim of Zhamyl region, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov in Taraz city. The parties discussed the joint activities being carried out in the region, including the expansion of protected areas to preserve and protect the region's unique biodiversity and ecosystems, unleashing the potential of ecotourism in the region, and supporting the rural population.

The Akim of the region stressed the importance of improving forestry equipment and facilities for firefighting. He also stressed the need for the development of "clean" energy, pointing out the great potential of the region in the field of renewable energy. In particular, the meeting discussed the pilot project in Zhaugashbatyr village, where local authorities have requested UNDP's expertise in sustainable energy solutions and green financing instruments.

The parties also agreed to further explore the possibilities of using emission payments to unfold green projects support programme in the regions. The UNDP representative noted that the Kazakh Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources, together with UNDP agreed to test financing mechanisms aimed at improving the effectiveness of the use of emission payments through "green" projects in the regions of Kazakhstan.

Mr. Khojimatov also presented UNDP's range of financial instruments to support renewable energy development, energy conservation, and thermal upgrading in the housing and utilities sectors that both address environmental issues and promote socioeconomic development.
