Sustainable Landscapes, Responsible Commodities, and Thriving Communities
Sustainable Landscapes, Responsible Commodities, and Thriving Communities
December 8, 2025
Can agricultural commodity production protect forests while improving livelihoods? Between 2023 and 2025, the Sustainable Landscape Program Indonesia (SLPI) tested whether multi-stakeholder collaboration in Aceh, Riau, West and Central Kalimantan, as well as East Kalimantan, could create pathways where economic development and conservation advance together. Working alongside four landscape consortia — the Leuser Alas-Singkil River Basin (LASR) led by Swisscontact, the Siak-Pelalawan Landscape Programme (SPLP) by Daemeter, the Mosaik Initiative by Kaleka, and SUSTAIN Kutim by GIZ — UNDP’s role in SLPI focused on convening diverse actors and strengthening their capacity to solve problems collectively. The images and stories in this photo journal illustrate what change looks like on the ground when safe spaces are created for collaboration and local leadership emerges. Published at the conclusion of SLPI’s first phase, this photo journal offers insights for anyone working at the intersection of sustainable agriculture, forest conservation, and community development in Indonesia.
