Our Mission

Climate Promise supports the Government of Indonesia to achieve its NDC targets and Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060. A part of UNDP's global initiative for climate action, Climate Promise has been working with more than 140 countries and territories and ensures the inclusive participation of 37 million people in climate action. The initiative succeeds to help 80% of developing countries create stronger climate pledges, fight environmental injustice and contribute towards the Paris Agreement targets.

Indonesia is taking significant steps to strengthen its climate commitments and the potential economic benefits of its climate actions. Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI)

The Climate Promise in Indonesia highlights that climate goals can only be achieved through approaches that are both inclusive and equitable. UNDP’s support goes beyond technical solutions in the transition to Net Zero Emissions, it emphasizes gender integration, ensuring that under-represented communities are empowered as leaders, innovators, and decision-makers in climate action.

By linking gender equality, youth empowerment, Indigenous People's contribution, sustainable forest management, and climate finance opportunities such as carbon markets, the Climate Promise demonstrates that climate action is most effective when it is inclusive, participatory, and transformative. This integrated approach secures long-term benefits for people, forests, and the planet, while building the next generation of leaders who will sustain Indonesia’s pathway toward Net Zero Emissions.

Forest and Other Land Use (FOLU)

The FOLU sector plays a powerful role in tackling climate change and shaping sustainable development. From forests and peatlands to agricultural lands and settlements, this vast landscape acts as both a source of greenhouse gas emissions – and a solution.

With the generous support from the Departement of Environment, Foods and Rural Affairs of the United Kindom, Climate Promise contributed to the establishment of High Integrity Carbon Market in the FOLU sector. It also raised awareness of Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030, which is the key sectoral program to achieve the FOLU targets in the NDC.

Nationally Determined Contribution (ENDC)

By fostering a robust market environment, Climate Promise UNDP is empowering both public and private sectors to invest in impactful decarbonization projects, leveraging economic incentives to meet Indonesia's ambitious Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets and ultimately drive the country towards a Net Zero future. The project also contributed to enhance forest monitoring system, and the development of Indonesia’s Second Nationally Determined Contribution (SNDC).

Development of Carbon Pricing

With the support of Japan Supplementary Budget (JSB), Climate Promise assisted the Government of Indonesia in the preparation of carbon trading in Indonesia's energy and forestry sectors, that include the development of the cap-and-trade system for the energy sector, an integrated registry system for Indonesia’s carbon pricing initiative (CPI), upgrade of the MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) readiness level for forestry to comply with the Enhanced Transparency Framework that is consistent with REDD+ submissions, assessment of International Carbon Trading Potential for the Energy and Forestry sectors, and the digitalization of carbon monitoring.

Energy Sector

Under the support of JSB, Climate Promise succeeded to develop net-zero pathways for private sector companies and Operational Procedures for Carbon Credit Standby Buyer, issued Emission Reduction Verification and Carbon Credit, built prototype of Business Model for Carbon Credit Transactions.
