UNDP and Indonesian chamber of commerce KADIN join forces to advance SDGs in the business sector

Jakarta, 20 July 2022 — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) to carry out joint actions to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through increased private sector involvement. 

UNDP and KADIN will promote the implementation of green sustainability principles, the Leave No One Behind agenda and the formulation of financing for climate action and sustainable development.  Under the MOU, the two entities will push for the integration of these inclusive and green principles into business operations. 

UNDP Indonesia Resident Representative, Norimasa Shimomura said the agreement marks an important chapter in promoting sustainability practices in the Indonesian corporate world.

“Sustainability presents a win-win strategy for the corporate world to charge forward. Our collaboration with KADIN will further push the sustainability agenda to the forefront because we are anticipating many businesses, including small and medium enterprises, to follow suit in adopting inclusive as well as green and zero emission business models. Our shared goals of creating a sustainable future for Indonesia through innovation will help drive these efforts significantly,” said Mr. Shimomura.

KADIN Chairperson, Arsjad Rasjid, said that the MoU will pave the way for the private sector to play a stronger role in supporting the Indonesian government achieves the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as set in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“Private sector has always been an important engine of Indonesia’s growth. Now, we are more than ready to be part of the solution to the achievement of the SDGs. This collaboration has the potential to improve the ecosystem needed for an inclusive and green development agenda because we will be able to access and generate much-needed knowledge and best practices on sustainability practices.,” said Mr. Rasjid.

The MOU will see the two entities pushing for stronger private sector contribution towards the SDGs in key initiatives such as i) facilitating green investment in the private sector’ transition towards clean energy, ii) supporting micro-small medium enterprises (MSMEs) to become more resilient to future social and economic shocks and disasters, iii) advocating for human rights practices in business operations, as well as the compliance with the ESG (Environmental Social Governance) principles,  iv) scaling up social investor network and knowledge sharing through existing regional multi-national cooperation platforms such as the Archipelagic & Island States Forum (AIS Forum, and (v) developing innovative financing schemes such as blended finance and impact investment among others to fast-track SDGs achievement with the private sector.

KADIN is the umbrella organization of the Indonesian business chambers and associations and businesses. It is focused on all matters relating to trade, industry, and services, and is highly committed to tapping the potential and synergies of the national economy, offering a strategic forum for Indonesian entrepreneurs.

As part of Kadin’s sustainability strategy, the entity has recently launched Net Zero Hub programme, a platform for corporates, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), to share information, expertise, resources, and technologies to become a net-zero entity.
