Just Energy Transition Seed Funding - Guyana

The 'Just Energy Transition' project in Guyana is a one-year initiative aimed at accelerating the country's shift toward clean energy in the transportation sector, in alignment with Guyana's Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030. With support from the UN Joint SDG Fund and collaboration between the Guyana Energy Agency, UNDP, and IOM, the project will install four new solar-powered EV charging stations in Georgetown, supplementing the six already in operation. These stations will be grid-connected and powered by 15kW solar photovoltaic systems, collectively avoiding over 54 tons of CO2 emissions annually. A key feature is its inclusive vocational training component, which will train 20 master trainers, with a focus on women and youth, in EV maintenance, solar PV installation, and charging station management. These efforts aim to foster green jobs and build technical capacity for the energy transition.

This project demonstrates Guyana’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility and environmental stewardship by making electric vehicles more practical and affordable, especially as the country's vehicle ownership and fossil fuel consumption continue to rise. Through strategic policy alignment and capacity building—particularly through the Board of Industrial Training (BIT)—the initiative contributes to multiple SDGs, including clean energy (SDG 7), climate action (SDG 13), and education (SDG 4). It also complements other government-led efforts, such as solar farm development and hydropower expansion, ensuring that Guyana's broader green transition is both equitable and impactful.
