The Ministry of Legal Affairs with support from UNDP Guyana and the EU Mission in Guyana Advance Justice Sector Modernisation in Guyana through the PACE Justice Project

GEORGETOWN – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Guyana Country Office, in collaboration with the Government of Guyana and  hostedand hosted a Handover Ceremony under the European Union- funded PACE Justice Project on 8th January 2026, marking a significant step toward strengthening justice systems in Guyana and across the Caribbean.

The event was attended by key stakeholders, including the Hon. Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mohabir Anil Nandlall SC MP, Implementing Partner and Chair of the National Steering Committeee, Ambassador of the European Union Mission to Guyana, Luca Pierantoni,  and beneficiaries including Chancellor of the Judiciary, Roxane George CCH SC.

The PACE Justice Project, a regional initiative implemented in eight Commonwealth Caribbean countries, aims to enhance access to justice, improve efficiency, and promote restorative practices. To date, UNDP Guyana has procured hardware (including laptops, desktops, printers, and other equipment), and specialised softrware, including liberty court recording software which will be installed in various courtrooms across Guyana. These items were acquired at a cost of approximately  USapproximately USD400,000. 

In 2026,  the PACE Justice project will prioritise capacity-building, hardware, and additional specialised software. An additional USD250,000 will be invested in enhancing Guyana’s criminal justice sector through March 2027. Key priorities  going forward include digitisation, digitalisation, and interoperability, alongside rehabilitation and reintegration programmes for inmates to reduce recidivism and foster social inclusion.
