On the observance of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOTB), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Guyana reaffirms its unwavering commitment to building an inclusive and equitable society—one where all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, can live with dignity, safety, and opportunity.

This year’s theme, 'The Power of Communities,' shines a light on the transformative role that collective action plays in the fight for equality. From grassroots organisers to civil society leaders, communities have always been at the forefront of advancing LGBTQI+ rights and dismantling systems of exclusion. Their efforts remind us that inclusive progress is possible when people come together to support one another.

Across the Caribbean, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI+) persons continue to face disproportionate levels of discrimination, poverty, and social exclusion. These challenges are compounded by barriers in accessing education, employment, housing, and social protection services—critical elements of sustainable human development. UNDP is helping governments design and implement policies that recognize and respond to the lived realities of transgender persons. This Roadmap provides practical, context-sensitive guidance to ensure that transgender individuals are not left behind in national poverty reduction and social protection strategies.

As highlighted in UNDP’s Humanity Divided report, inequality erodes the social fabric of communities and undermines development outcomes. To confront this, UNDP supports inclusive governance, access to justice, and participatory decision-making processes—ensuring that LGBTQI+ voices are heard and respected at every level.

UNDP’s work in Guyana reflects a deep understanding that sustainable development cannot be achieved if inequality and exclusion persist. Through initiatives such as the Roadmap for Transgender-Inclusive Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation Programmes in Barbados, Guyana, and Jamaica.

Today, and every day, UNDP Guyana stands in solidarity with LGBTQI+ communities. We encourage and support all stakeholders—governments, civil society, and development partners—to advance legal protections, challenge stigma and discrimination, and invest in inclusive systems that uphold the rights and wellbeing of all.

Together, we can build a Guyana where equality is not a privilege for some, but a right enjoyed by all.
