National Human Development Report

The National Human Development Report (2014) entitled ‘‘Youth Employment’’ was launched by Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy on Sunday 14th December, 2014 in Jenoi. The launching was part of the opening of ceremony of the conference component of the 11th Edition of the National Youth Conference and Festival (NAYCONF).

The 2014 Report is geared towards supporting the implementation of The Gambia's medium-term development strategy, Programme for Accelerated Growth and Development (PAGE), by providing information on the quantity and quality of employment of the Gambian youth; and subsequently, inform the design of the successor plan.

The findings of the NHDR, which was funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Office and executed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, under the guidance of a National Steering Committee, will provide government and other stakeholders with information on youth employment, unemployment and related indicators for informed decision-making in policy and programme formulation on youth employment

Highlights

  • Youth make up the largest proportion of the Gambian population of 1.9 million (36.7% are aged 13-30 years-Census 2013);
  • Most of the employed population is working in the informal sector with 62.8 per cent of the population working as self-employed
  • Women are disproportionately represented in the informal sector with 73.8 per cent compared to males 55.3 per cent
  • The Gambian Education system is facing high level of inefficiency
  • Apprenticeship and on-the-job training is only contributing to 35.6 per cent of the trainees
