UNDP and Partners Drive Climate Action, Green Jobs and Resilient Communities Across The Gambia
June 5, 2026
Banjul, 5 June 2026 – On World Environment Day 2026, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is highlighting how investments in clean energy, climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods and environmental stewardship are improving lives and creating opportunities for communities across the country.
As climate change continues to threaten livelihoods, ecosystems and economic growth, UNDP is supporting The Gambia's transition towards a greener, more resilient and inclusive future, one that protects natural resources while expanding opportunities for women, youth and vulnerable communities.
Aligned with this year's World Environment Day theme, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future," UNDP is advancing integrated solutions that strengthen climate resilience, expand access to renewable energy, promote sustainable natural resource management, and create green jobs that leave no one behind.
Delivering Results for People and Planet
Across The Gambia, UNDP-supported interventions are delivering tangible benefits for communities while contributing to the country's climate ambitions and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Key achievements include:
• Expanding access to clean and affordable energy: More than 10,000 people, most of them women, are benefiting from renewable energy solutions, including solar mini-grids, solar home systems, pay-as-you-go technologies and institutional greening initiatives, improving livelihoods and access to essential services.
• Creating green jobs and sustainable livelihoods: Environmental and climate investments have supported the creation of more than 200 green jobs, including through women-led waste-to-wealth enterprises, solar businesses, clean cooking solutions and nature-based enterprises.
• Empowering communities to protect natural resources: More than 2,000 hectares of forest land have been transferred to community ownership, strengthening local governance, conserving biodiversity and creating sustainable income opportunities.
• Promoting sustainable production and environmental protection: Targeted interventions are helping communities adopt climate-smart agricultural practices, reduce reliance on harmful chemicals and improve waste and pollution management systems.
Innovation and Partnerships for Lasting Impact
UNDP's work demonstrates that climate action and development go hand in hand.
Through innovative financing models, digital technologies and strategic partnerships, communities are gaining access to renewable energy, entrepreneurs are building green businesses, and women and young people are taking on leadership roles in the green economy.
From solar-powered processing facilities that increase productivity and incomes to circular economy initiatives that transform waste into economic opportunity, these investments are helping build a more sustainable and resilient future for all.
Supporting The Gambia's Climate Ambitions
UNDP remains a committed partner in supporting The Gambia's climate agenda and implementation of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). With a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 49.7 percent by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, The Gambia continues to demonstrate leadership in pursuing low-carbon and climate-resilient development pathways.
A Call for Collective Action
"Protecting the environment is not only about safeguarding ecosystems, it is about protecting livelihoods, strengthening resilience and securing a sustainable future for generations to come. The progress achieved across The Gambia demonstrates what is possible when governments, communities, development partners and the private sector work together towards a shared vision for people and planet."
As the world marks World Environment Day, UNDP calls for renewed commitment and stronger partnerships to accelerate climate action, scale innovative solutions and ensure that sustainable development reaches every community.
