The European Union, UNDP and the African Union to support inclusive development across Africa
January 16, 2025
The European Union (EU) has committed funding of $1 Million to the Africa Facility to Support Inclusive Transitions (AFSIT), a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the African Union Commission (AUC). This funding will advance the development and updating of the Africa Transition Index (ATI) platform, providing African governments with vital data-driven insights to guide their transitions, strengthen governance and promote long-term stability across the continent.
ATI is designed to equip policymakers with the tools they need to make informed decisions that ensure stability and foster sustainable development. By addressing the challenges of governance, AFSIT will support African nations in crafting long-term, inclusive solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
“The European Union’s investment in the Africa Transition Index is an investment in Africa’s potential. With data as the compass, this partnership empowers African governments to navigate complex transitions, build resilient institutions, and unlock pathways to inclusive growth. This is how governance drives stability and ensures every African has a stake in peace and prosperity,” emphasized Ahunna Eziakonwa, UN Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director of UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Africa.
As part of its mission, ATI will track key indicators related to governance, economic performance and social stability. This will provide African leaders with the evidence-based policy tools they need. Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, highlighted the relevance of ATI in advancing Africa’s vision: “ EU’s support will provide African nations with the resources to manage their transitions effectively. With the right data, these transitions will lead to sustainable development, stability and the realization of the Africa We Want.”
EU’s funding for ATI aligns with its broader commitment to supporting Africa’s sustainable development. By strengthening the capacity of African countries to manage transitions with accurate data, the EU is helping to shape an Africa that is resilient, prosperous and secure.
AFSIT continues to assist governments, Regional Economic Commissions and Regional Mechanisms across the continent, offering strategic guidance, tools and data to support Africa’s transition processes. Ultimately, it serves the citizens of Africa, ensuring they benefit from a peaceful and prosperous future.
