The European Union (EU) is a long-standing partner of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and its third-largest funding partner globally.

Across the region, this partnership supports recovery in Ukraine, helps make communities safer by destroying illegal weapons in the Western Balkans, rebuilds schools and expands access to education, creates jobs and opportunities, strengthens local leadership, and helps communities prepare for climate risks in Central Asia.

On Europe Day, these stories highlight how the EU and UNDP work together to deliver practical results and support sustainable development across the region.

#1 Ukraine: Rebuilding cities, restoring lives

In Ukraine, UNDP and the EU support recovery and reconstruction in war-affected areas through the EU4Recovery initiative. In cities like Mykolaiv, critical infrastructure and essential services are being restored after heavy damage. In 2025, nearly 25,000 people benefited from improved social care services, while local systems are being strengthened to support long-term recovery.

#2 Western Balkans: Destroying weapons, strengthening safety

In Southeast Europe, the EU and UNDP work together through the SEESAC initiative to reduce illegal firearms and improve safety. In 2025, more than 3,400 weapons were destroyed, over 500 professionals were trained, and 18 women’s organizations were involved in community safety efforts. Pictured here is a destruction event in Bulboaca, Republic of Moldova, where over 2,100 weapons collected through law enforcement actions and voluntary surrender were safely destroyed with EU support. These efforts help make communities safer and strengthen cooperation between institutions.

#3 Türkiye: Opening doors for women in industry

“Women’s involvement in the twin transformation is a powerful step for both equality and a sustainable future,” says Zeynep. In Türkiye, an EU-funded project implemented by UNDP, the Turkish Confederation of Employer Associations (TİSK) and the Ministry of Industry and Technology supports women’s participation in manufacturing. Through training and partnerships, women gain access to jobs, contributing to more inclusive economic development.

#4 Cyprus: Bridging communities through shared heritage

Since 2012, the EU and UNDP have helped restore 196 cultural heritage sites across Cyprus. Pictured here is the ancient city of Soli, on the island’s northwest coast. Beyond protecting important sites like this one, the partnership brings Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities closer together, encourages dialogue and helps build a shared sense of identity for future generations.

#5 Central Asia: Preparing communities for climate risks

In Central Asia, the EU and UNDP support communities in preparing for climate-related risks in the Ferghana Valley, which spans Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. In Tajikistan’s Sughd Region, as shown here, community members take part in practical drills on early warning systems to better prepare for floods and extreme weather. These efforts include installing six sirens in high-risk areas, helping more than 20,000 people receive timely alerts. Together, they ensure communities are better informed, prepared and able to respond quickly in emergencies.

#6 Albania: Recovering after earthquake, preparing for what’s next

In Albania, the EU and UNDP are rebuilding and modernizing schools damaged by the 2019 earthquake. Since 2023, over 70 schools have been restored through the EU4Schools programme, benefiting more than 24,529 students and teachers. Temporary buildings have been replaced with safe, modern and resilient classrooms. Pictured here is the Emin Duraku School in Tirana, one of the rebuilt schools.

#7 Western Balkans: Building trust through remembrance and dialogue

In the Western Balkans, the EU and UNDP support communities in addressing the legacy of past conflicts and war crimes. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, survivors and young people come together to share experiences, learn from each other and reflect on the past. These activities help preserve memory, strengthen understanding and build trust between generations, contributing to more peaceful societies.

#8 Republic of Moldova: Modernising education for future generations

In the Republic of Moldova, the EU, Poland and UNDP are helping improve education by investing in schools, teacher training and modern learning tools. A total of 42 new school laboratories are being set up, benefiting around 7,600 students and helping young people gain practical skills for the future.

#9 Western Balkans: Supporting skills and job opportunities for returnees

Uroš, a trainee car mechanic, gained practical skills through an EU-funded programme implemented by UNDP in Serbia, helping him move towards employment in his field. Across the Western Balkans, the EU and UNDP support returnees and vulnerable groups by providing training and helping them access jobs. In Albania, North Macedonia and Serbia, over 1,700 people have gained new skills, improving their chances of finding stable work and building a better future.

As challenges evolve across Europe and Central Asia, the EU–UNDP partnership continues to adapt. From rebuilding after crises to preparing for the future, it supports people, strengthens institutions and invests in long-term solutions that improve everyday life.
