Sustainable Spatial Planning and Development (S-SpaD2030)
What is the project about?
S-SpaD2030 is a 5-year Project that strengthens collaboration between UNDP and the General Organization for Physical Planning (GOPP) to reduce regional disparities and urban imbalances through sustainable spatial planning. The project introduces a novel planning approach that integrates social, environmental, and economic aspects in a multi-level and cross-sectoral coordination. Its core objective is to support Egypt in adopting planning models that maximize environmental, social, and economic benefits while assessing the environmental impacts of development choices and identifying cumulative, synergistic, and transregional effects.
Situational Background:
The project directly contributes to the UNPDF outcome that calls for natural resources --including urban environments-- to be managed in an inclusive, sustainable and productive manner to mitigate environmental hazards and reap the benefits of a greener economy and society. The project focuses on reducing urban imbalances through novel sustainable national and regional planning approaches that place environment at a central location of the planning process. It envisages that through a balanced spatial planning, social equality and improved quality of life could be achieved.
How are we doing this?
The project works with GOPP to modernize national and regional planning processes by:
• Developing tools and evidence-based systems for sustainable spatial planning.
• Integrating socio-economic and environmental considerations into national and regional development strategies.
• Strengthening institutional capacities and enhancing multi-level coordination for more efficient, inclusive, and environmentally responsible planning.
Supporting communication, training, and knowledge-sharing to ensure wide adoption and long-term sustainability of spatial planning reforms.
How will Egypt benefit?
The project aims to achieve the following outputs:
1. Sustainable Spatial Development Map (SSDM) of Egypt developed
A comprehensive national map that guides long-term development choices, supports balanced regional planning, and informs investment decisions.
2. The enterprise-based geospatial urban planning platform optimized and disseminated
A modern digital planning platform enabling GOPP and governorates to access, analyse, and use spatial data for more effective planning, monitoring, and decision-making.
3. Institutional Support, Communication Strategy & Capacity Building
Enhancing GOPP’s institutional systems, improving staff capabilities, and promoting the adoption of sustainable spatial planning approaches across national and local entities.
