What is the project about?
Implemented by the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) and funded by the Government of Japan, the project aims to strengthen African capacities to respond to complex and evolving security threats. It enhances the effectiveness and operational capabilities of UN peacekeeping operations and African peace support operations, with a strong focus on gender equality, youth engagement, knowledge exchange, and policy development.
Situational Background
Africa continues to face interconnected and evolving security challenges–from armed conflict and terrorism, to forced displacement and the destabilizing effects of climate change. These challenges have placed growing pressure on local, national and regional institutions.
The evolving nature of armed groups and the complexity of modern conflicts demands, integrated, flexible and locally led interventions. There is a growing need for African-led peace support operations that mainstream gender and youth perspectives and incorporate climate and environmental dimensions into their strategies.
This project directly addresses these needs by strenghthening institutional and operational capacities across the continent, supporting the implementation of key UN Security Council Resolutions.
How are we doing this?
The project adopts a holistic approach, leveraging CCCPA’s expertise and partnerships to deliver impact through:
• Training of trainers (ToT) on prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA) for African Union peace support operations.
• Pre-deployment training for Egyptian peacekeepers to strenghthen readiness and compliance with international standards
• Updating training materials in coordination with the UN Integrated Training Services.
• Workshops and consultations to capture lessons learned from AU-led operations.
• Training and development of manuals to advance the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) agenda.
• Engagement with Egyptian ministries, regional and international organizations, and Japanese partners for joint activities, policy dialogue and knowledge sharing.
How will Egypt benefit?:
The project positions Egypt as a regional leader in peacekeeping, training, and conflict prevention, while contributing to Africa’s overall peace and stability.
It aims to:
Build and strengthen African capacities to enhance the effectiveness and operational capabilities of UN peacekeeping operations and African peace support operations.
