Egyptian Italian Environmental Cooperation Phase III

Background

The current third phase of EIECP aims at further developing Egypt's protected areas (PAs) system, mainly with the view of establishing income-generating mechanism and, thus, facilitate the process for mobilizing resources toward the financial sustainability of the Egypt's PAs system and, in this way, its conservation and sustainable development endeavours. EIECP III will also tackle other PAs management needs of the Nature Conservation Sector (NCS) of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA), such as information gathering/generation management and analysis.

Accomplishments

  • Support establishment of eco-tourism association in Fayoum.
  • Supporting the tourism NGO in Fayoum by preparing proposals to be submitted to the Small Grants Programme and CIB bank.
  • Preparing tourism business plan for Fayoum PA.
  • Training, mentoring and coaching for Youth of Abo Ghosoun NGO and Sons of Ababda: Training and capacity building of local NGOs and Women Cooperative: Training and capacity building of local NGOs.
  • Develop new community-based tourism routes and products in Qatrani.
  • Recreational 24 boats for local community and Upgrading the waterfall site at Wady Rayan.
  • Regular cleaning campaigns & volunteer programmes for fossil awareness under the targeted PAs with the contribution of all local stakeholders, community members and visitors.
  • Handover of the administrative building, gates and other facilities at Qatrani open Museum.
  • Upgrade pottery site at Nazla village: new community-based tourism Craft-experience products at Fayoum.
  • Improvement of infrastructures, services and hotspots based on Fayoum Pas.
  • Setup a security system for the administrative building on WRPA.
  • 290 women trained in Wadi Gemal (Abo Ghoson, Hamata and Baranis) and now able to create and craft new categories of accessories (earing & rings) and leather crafts (150 types of different products) and 220 crafters trained in Fayoum.
  • Create new market opportunities for local handcraft products by participating in marketing events CSA outlet; UNDP exhibition; COP14; International handcraft show in Cairo; various hotels in Wadi Gemal).
  • Create four permanent products outlets: Bedouin Tents in Abo Ghosoun and Ababda House; craft displays at Marina Hamata and Qulaan.
  • Implement educational programme on foreign languages: 39 trainees were trained on English language.
