The Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development

What is the project about?

The Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development is a flagship, high-level platform convened by the Government of Egypt with the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping & Peacebuilding (CCCPA) serving as its secretariat.

The forum fosters African-led dialogue and action on peace, security, and development, bringingtogether leaders from African governments, international and regional organizations, financial institutions, the private sector, civil society and the research community

Implemented by CCCPA, the Fourth and Fifth Editions of the Forum have provided a platform to shape African perspectives on global governance, multilateralism, and the humanitarian–development–peace (HDP) nexus-- generating actionable recommendations to address complex and interconnected challenges facing the continent. Each edition features high-level panels, roundtables, and side events that generate actionable recommendations in line with Agenda 2063 and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Situational Background

Africa is navigating a period of unprecedented global and regional turbulence, marked by geopolitical tensions, economic shocks, climate change, and persistent conflict. Despite being among the most affected regions, the continent remains underrepresented in global governance structures, limiting its vocie in shaping responses to these challenges.

The rising complexity of security and development threats -- from protracted conflicts and forced displacement to climate-related crises — has exposed the limitations of existing global frameworks and underscored the need for more inclusive, equitable, and effective multilateralism.

The Aswan Forum was established to fill this gap. It offers a unique African-owned and African-led platform for strategic reflection, policy dialogue and the co-creation of solutions that advancesustainable peace, resilienceand development across the continent

How are we doing this?

Implemented by CCCPA, the project follows a participatory and consultative approach that includes:

1. Preparatory expert workshops and multi-stakeholder consultations to identify emerging trends, priorities, and solutions.,

2. Organization of the Annual Aswan Forum, featuring high-level panels, roundtables, and side events that bring together policymnakers, practitionersm and researchers,

3. Development and dissemination of the “Aswan Conclusions,” a set of key takeaways and recommendations guiding African and international policy discussions.

4. Follow-up research, capacity-building, and policy activities to operationalize Forum outcomes.

5. Mainstreaming of gender balance, inclusivity, and South–South cooperation throughout all Forum processes and outputs..

How will Egypt benefit?:

1. Through this initiative, Egypt positions itself as a continental and global convener for dialogue and action on peace, security, and sustainable development. The project contributes to: Organization of the Annual Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development:
Egypt hosts the high-level, multi-stakeholder forum, positioning itself as a continental leader in shaping African and global policy on peace, security, and development.

2. Development, publication, and follow-up of the “Aswan Conclusions” and actionable policy recommendations:
Each annual forum produces a set of concrete, action-oriented recommendations to guide African and international efforts on multilateralism, the HDP nexus, and emerging challenges. These will be operationalized through targeted research, capacity-building, and policy engagement.

3. Strengthened national and continental capacities for policy implementation, and knowledge generation:
