Trunk E / Trunk 1 Sewer Reconstruction
Project Title | Trunk E / Trunk 1 Sewer Reconstruction |
Overall Objective | To improve wastewater management in Nicosia |
Output | Trunk E and Trunk 1 Sewers reconstructed |
Location | Nicosia, Cyprus |
Type of investment | Construction works |
Description of investment | The intended works encompass:
The works are divided in three sections:
In total, 3477 meters of trunk sewer will be reconstructed. In November 2025, it was decided that a 400mm HDPE pressure pipe in a total length of 2713 meters would be added to the project. This pipe will be used to transport part of the treated effluent from the Nicosia wastewater treatment plant to the Greek Cypriot community. The treated effluent will be used for irrigation purposes. This investment will be the first part of a larger project aiming at maximising the use of the water resources in Cyprus. |
Intended beneficiary | Direct beneficiaries: Turkish Cypriot local community of Nicosia and Municipality of Nicosia Indirect beneficiaries: all inhabitants of Nicosia |
Scope of works | The Nicosia sewerage Trunk E was built in 1986 using asbestos pipes. It was a bi-communal project. Since then and after more than 30 years of operation, the original asbestos sections of the network are in a critical state with sections collapsing. In order not to block wastewater flow and risk overflow, the collapsed network is temporarily replaced by an open ditch which entails environmental, health and safety risks. In 2000, a 2 km section of the Trunk E was replaced due to the deterioration of the pipes. The Sewerage Board of Nicosia (SBN), responsible for the sections located in the southern parts of the city, completed the rehabilitation of a 1 km section in Nicosia in 2023. In total, 4,200 meters of pipes need to be replaced. The implementation of the project benefits both communities. |
