EU-Funded Investment Enhances Wastewater Infrastructure in Famagusta
July 1, 2025

Nicosia, 1st July 2025 – The European Union, under the EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, is funding a major upgrade to the Famagusta Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), implemented by UNDP through the Local Infrastructure Facility (LIF). With an investment of EUR 832,000, the project aims to restore the plant’s operations to full efficiency, strengthening essential services for the local community.
Built in 2013 with EU financial support, the Famagusta WWTP has played a key role in the region’s sanitation system. The refurbishment will upgrade treatment components and renew critical instruments, ensuring continued reliable wastewater services and contributing to improved environmental protection and public health.
A contract signature ceremony was held on 1st of July in Famagusta, marking an important step in the implementation of the project and reflecting the strong collaboration between the European Union, UNDP and local stakeholders. Equipment installation is expected to begin in November 2025 and conclude by March 2026.
By strengthening vital infrastructure and improving service delivery, the project supports a more resilient and sustainable future for Famagusta and contributes to broader efforts toward environmental protection and sustainable development across Cyprus.
