Pedieos River / Kandelire Rehabilitation Project – Part 1

Project Title
Pedieos River / Kandelire Rehabilitation Project – Part 1
Overall Objective
To provide citizens of Nicosia with a better environment for recreational activities and bi-communal interaction
Output
Increased family friendly space for open-air recreational activities across the UN Buffer Zone (BZ)
Location
Nicosia
Type of investment
Construction works
Description of investment

Construction of a bicycle path connecting the Pedieos River/ Kandelire path north of the UN Buffer Zone to the path south of the UN Buffer Zone through Ledra Palace crossing. It is part of a larger project: construction of a linear park along the Pedieos River/Kandelire on a total length of 3.7 km (845 m in the UN BZ and 2835 m north of the UN BZ). A section long of 420 m will also be built south of the UN BZ by the Municipality of Nicosia.

This larger project includes the construction of a walking and cycling path, the creation of recreational areas and the preservation of nature spots.

Intended beneficiary
Direct beneficiaries: 175,000 annual visitors

Indirect beneficiaries: Turkish Cypriot community and Greek Cypriot Community of Nicosia
Scope of works

Currently, only the southern section of the Pedieos river is being used as a recreational space in Nicosia. The path is interrupted at the UN Buffer Zone. This limits the potential offered by the Pedieos river for recreational activities north of the UN Buffer Zone, but most importantly for contact and exchange between the two communities.

The northern section of the river was also left without care for many years. Through this investment, the intention is to create:

  • A place that integrates health – ensures people have access to open and green spaces for their physical, mental, and social health.

  • A place that prioritizes people – add activities and functions that meet local demands and respect local communities.

  • A place that revitalizes the river – improves the natural conditions and protects flora and fauna.

  • A place for both communities to meet.

Actions taken by UNDP
  1. Feasibility study
The feasibility study was conducted directly by the EU in 2018 and completed by mid-2019. UNDP contracted additional services to develop a sustainability plan together with the Turkish Cypriot local community of Nicosia.

  2. Preparation of Employer’s requirements
Based on the feasibility study, Employer’s Requirements (ER) were prepared as the original approach was a Design and Build one in 2019. However, after detailed consideration, it was decided to change the approach to a Design, Bid and Build one. The ER were used as the basis to contract the design services.
