Historical background information

The Quirini Bastion is located in Nicosia. The first walls surrounding Nicosia were built in the 14th century by the Franks and enclosed a much larger area than the 16th century Venetian Walls that still surround the old town. The part of the Nicosia Venetian Walls located at the Quirini Bastion was included in the emergency projects after it collapsed due to the percolation of water in the wall surfaces. The interventions carried out for this monument comprised emergency support measures in order to preserve the building’s current status and prevent collapse.

The Quirini Bastion was selected as one of the priority emergency conservation projects by the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, following the collapse that occurred during heavy rainfall. Within the framework of the EU-funded and UNDP-implemented project Support to Cultural Heritage Monuments of Great Importance for Cyprus, a comprehensive study titled “Survey, Investigations, Assessment, and Project Design” was completed in 2023. The subsequent emergency conservation works were carried out between 2023 and 2024.
