Historical background information

The site includes two structures built in contact, a Mosque and a School, attached to the south-east side of the Mosque. The school structure has nowadays collapsed and only its north wall remains. In the courtyard of the mosque there is also a cistern with carved decorations and markings and a concrete fountain. Unfortunately, there is no clear reference to the exact date of construction of the mosque or school buildings. However, according to documents, the plot in which the mosque and the school were erected, was registered in on 01/01/1925. This date is therefore considered a landmark since the buildings were built with certainty after this date. The only date found on this building, is engraved on the fountain outside the mosque (1957) which is from the British Colonial era. There are also some (minor and major) maintenance works of the mosque recorded from 1977 until 2015.

The Mosque in the village of Terra/Terra  was selected as part of the priority conservation projects of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage. Within the framework of the EU funded and UNDP implemented Support to cultural heritage monuments of great importance for Cyprus project, a study “Survey, Investigations, Assessment and Project Design” was carried out in 2021 and the conservation works were implemented in 2024.
