Historical background information

The site that the mosque is located is in the village of Kalavasos (40 km from the Larnaca, 30km from Limassol).
The Mosque is a single-storey stone masonry structure of rectangular layout; the building is aligned from north-east to south-west. There is a portico at the north-west side of the main building with pointy arches and tiled roof. The portico has the appearance of having been added to the mosque after its initial construction. The large minaret rises in the mosque’s north-east corner where its doors open into the portico. Minaret’s platform has solid stone banister with carved relief design on the outer face; with repeating patterns. This feature can only be found in two other minarets in Cyprus, therefore adding to the building’s architectural value. There is also trace for an area of a school (not part of the yard).

The building stands on a sloping ground. The walls are strengthened by buttresses built right up to the roof. The pitched and tiled roof is constructed of rafters resting on beams.

Between 1878-1888 Minaret and Mosque roof were repaired as well as some small repairing interventions to the Mosque main building. In 1905, roof tiles were added to the Mosque roof.

Main interventions for this site include:

  • General cleaning
  • Vegetation removal, earthworks in yard
  • Removal of loose and deteriorated wall mortar plasters externally and internally
  • Replastering of walls
  • Application of paint to the plastered walls
  • Repointing to the stone joints at the walls and perimeter stone walls
  • Crack repairs with grouting and stitching methods
  • Roof works including repair of wooden and metal elements
  • Repair of wooden doors, windows and shutters
  • Replacement of damaged floor tiles inside the mosque and at the courtyard
  • Minaret works; including; repairing of wooden elements, stone replacement, repointing, installation of the metal elements, removal of mortar, application of paint and construction/repair of the steps of the minaret.

The project is funded by the European Union and implemented by United Nations Development Programme in partnership with the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.
