Historical background information

This Mosque is located is in the village of Avdimou/Evdim in the Limassol district (26 km west of Limassol, 5km south of Prastio).

The site is built along the bank of the Avdimou river. The plot slopes from the east towards the west and includes a Mosque with a minaret and a cemetery area. The Mosque and the minaret are on the western part of the plot, adjacent to the riverside. The cemetery is on the eastern part of the plot.

The Mosque is a single-storey rubble stone masonry structure, housing a rectangular prayer hall with a porch attached to its north side. The north side of the porch consists of a series of three pointed arches. Another pointed arch exists on the west side of the porch. On the east side of the porch, there is a shadirvan (ablution fountain). The main entrance to the prayer hall is from its north side, through a door with a semi-circular arch. On the west side of the prayer hall, there is a plastered mihrab. The roof’s covering consists of French-type clay tiles. The floors of both the prayer hall and the porch are composed of concrete.

The minaret is constructed of ashlar stone masonry and is built on the mid-length of the Mosque’s west wall. It has a rectangular pulpit which rises to the ridge of the Mosque’s roof. The shaft of the minaret is cylindrical and has a circular balcony at the upper part. The spire is conical and is covered with metallic sheets. A spiral stone stairway within the interior of the minaret leads to the balcony.

The courtyard includes a cemetery area and is covered with natural soil. Three graves can be found in the courtyard. The courtyard’s boundary wall is constructed of concrete blocks and has a steel railing with decorations (star and crescent symbols). The entrance to the courtyard is through a steel gate on the north, adjacent to the Mosque’s porch.
