Historical background information  

The mosque site is located at the south of the village of Alektora in the Limassol district and it occupies two plots, including two independently built structures; a mosque and a school. The mosque is a single-storey stone masonry structure of rectangular layout. The mosque plot, located on the west side of the courtyard. On the the main road level there is a fountain, while concrete steps provide access from the lower-level road to the courtyard between the mosque and the school.

Above the entrance door of the mosque there is an engraved inscription indicating the year of construction or the day that the mosque first opened for worship, which is 10/10/1931. There is also an engraved inscription above the main door of the school building that shows the year of 1908.  

The masonry construction of the mosque is characterized mainly by rectangular shaped rubble stones with chippings filling the interstices. On the south side of the prayer hall there is a plastered mihrab and a painted wooden minbar. On the northwest corner and northeast corner of the prayer hall there is a raised timber women’s gallery.

Main interventions for this site include:

  • Cleaning of masonry  
  • Replacement of deteriorated/fractured and missing stone blocks
  • Structural reinforcement and consolidation of the stone masonry  
  • Blockage of openings
  • Repointing and replastering masonry surfaces wherever necessary  
  • Removal of inappropriate additions  
  • Conservation of historic graffiti
  • Reconstruction of the roof of the school building and conservation of the mosque roof
  • Emergency preventive works of all timber and metallic elements and openings  
  • Repairs on the drainage system of the buildings.
  • Conservation of special elements
  • Repairs and conservation of the courtyard boundary walls and drainage system
