Description of investment

The focus of the investment is on the following units of the Famagusta WWTP:

  • Compact station – Mechanical pre-treatment unit
  • Sludge dewatering unit
  • Activated sludge tanks

Included in the investment is the replacement of instruments to ensure the good functioning of the automation system.

Intended beneficiary

Direct beneficiaries: local community of Famagusta

Indirect beneficiaries: citizens of the targeted local communities 

Scope of works

The Famagusta WWTP was built and put into operational in 2013. Since then, limited maintenance and equipment replacement was done, which has left the plant in a dire state and threatens the ability of the local community to properly treat the wastewater.

Actions taken by UNDP
  1. Preparation of the technical specifications
    The initial preparation of the technical specifications was done by the beneficiary at the end of 2023. However, due the first tender being inconclusive, it was decided to revise and improve the technical specifications. An expert was hired in September 2024. The new technical specifications were ready and finalised by December 2025.  

  2. Procurement of goods
    A first Invitation to Bid was launched at the end of March 2024. The process was inconclusive, and the tender was cancelled. A second ITB was launched at the end of December 2024. At the end of January 2025, three offers were received.

    It is expected that the procurement process will be completed by March 2025.

  3. Implementation
    Expected contract signature: Beginning of April 2025
    Expected installation of equipment: December 2025
