Tourism is one of Asia's most powerful economic engines – and one of its most significant sources of plastic pollution. But what if it could become a force for change instead?
That question was at the heart of UNDP's Global Plastics Innovation Programme Phase II (GPIP-II) Regional Workshop, held in Yokohama this February with the support of the Government of Japan.
Over 40 participants from six ASEAN countries – government ministries, tourism businesses, civil society, and research institutions – came together to learn from Japan's circular economy journey and exchange on plastics in tourism across the region.
This report captures the key takeaways and recommendations from the workshop discussions, including lessons from Japan's approach, shared challenges across ASEAN and recommendations for policymakers and tourism businesses.
