Geneva, Switzerland

The Minamata Convention on Mercury is a global treaty that aims to protect human health and the environment from mercury emissions and releases caused by human activity. It addresses the entire lifecycle of mercury — from primary mining and use in products and industrial processes to environmentally sound storage and disposal.

UNDP’s Engagement at COP-6

As a longstanding partner in advancing the goals of the Minamata Convention, UNDP supports countries in reducing and eliminating mercury use, while promoting circular economy approaches, and the sound management of chemicals and waste.

Working closely with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and other partners, UNDP helps governments and communities transition toward mercury-free economies, particularly in key sectors such as healthcare, artisanal and small-scale gold mining, and waste management.

At the Sixth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP-6), UNDP will participate in plenary discussions, technical sessions, and side events to share lessons learned and results from GEF-funded, UNDP-supported projects around the world. UNDP’s engagement highlights its continued commitment to helping countries meet their obligations under the Convention and protect people and planet from mercury pollution.

The discussion will explore opportunities and challenges in phasing out mercury-added devices such as thermometers, sphygmomanometers, dental amalgam, and lamps, and ensuring responsible collection, storage, and disposal of mercury waste.

The event will also offer a forum for Parties, policymakers, and practitioners to exchange insights on advancing the Minamata Convention’s goals through practical, scalable, and sustainable solutions.
