A man with folded arms stands confidently in front of a blue building on a rainy day.

For many years, entrepreneurs like Mr. Taing Sambath, faced inefficiencies and limitations in carrying out their business, limiting their prospects.

“I still remember the days when I had to contact my customers in person, carrying product samples and explaining our offerings just to secure a sale. It was time-consuming and unefficient. In six months, I used to sell 10 sacks of rice only”, recalled Mr. Taing Sambath, the owner of Taing Eanghout Rice Mill, a family-run business producing high-quality rice in Battambang province.

Recognizing the growing potential of using online platforms, Mr. Sambath realized that digitalizing his operations was essential for business expansion. The USD 5,000 award from the UNDP Innovation Challenge for Business Digitalization and E-commerce Acceleration came at the right time. Encouraged by the immediate impacts of digitalization, Mr. Sambath later invested additional funds to scale up these efforts.

With financial and technical assistance from the UNDP Innovation Challenge, he adopted a holistic approach to digital transformation. He installed a Point of Sale (POS) system that streamlined transactions, making his operation smoother and quicker. He also introduced an internal control system that improved the efficiency of day-to-day management. He also launched a website to showcase his rice products, allowing potential customers to explore his offerings online. To enhance visibility and engagement, he developed digital marketing content that made his brand more appealing. Standard packaging and promotional materials strengthened his business presence on Facebook and e-commerce platforms, opening new markets for his products and increasing his business visibility.

These interventions transformed his business. Brand awareness improved, and customer trust surged, leading to the sale of over 1,000 sacks of rice through social media during the period of 2022-2023. Later, his company’s website expanded market access and attracted international buyers from Mongolia and China, boosting his business reach. This led to a surge in sales, which tripled in 2024.

Mr. Sambath's story is a powerful testament to how digitalization and e-commerce can help micro, small, and medium businesses thrive in an increasingly digital economy.
