Bangladesh has committed to reducing GHG emissions in the power, industry, and transport sectors by 5 per cent unconditionally below business-as-usual (BAU) levels by 2030, and by up to 15 per cent conditionally with adequate international support. In this context, the Promoting Energy-Related Low Carbon Urban Development (LCUD) in Bangladesh project supports the country’s contribution to global climate action by addressing the growing economic and environmental costs of fossil fuel use and other unsustainable urban practices.
The project promotes low-carbon urban development by enabling investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy in buildings and the built environment. These investments, including rooftop solar PV, waste-to-energy, and improved energy use in buildings, are expected to generate cumulative direct GHG emission reductions of 1.573 million tons of CO2 over their lifetime. In addition, the project’s support for urban planning, awareness raising, and capacity development is expected to catalyze wider replication and scaling up of low-carbon practices in other cities beyond the project period
Major Project Components:
City-level integration of energy-relevant low-carbon urban development plans and programmes;
Implementation of selected low-carbon energy-efficiency, renewable energy and waste-to-energy interventions in cities;
Sensitization of city dwellers and capacity strengthening for low-carbon urban development.
Expected Project Outputs
- Coordinated and integrated low-carbon urban development plans and effective implementation of regulations.
- Increased investments in energy efficiency (EE), waste-to-energy (W2E) and renewable energy (RE) in buildings and the built environment.
- Knowledge increased of practitioners and awareness raised of city dwellers on low-carbon, green development.
