This report is part of a set of three policy studies which builds extensively upon prior work undertaken for the Policy study on Regional Mapping of Options to Promote Private Investments in Alternative Energy Sources for the Poor.

The study reviewed the role of private sector investment and financing for renewable energy technologies in meeting the needs of the poor. It was organized along two tracks: (a) the role of renewable energy in enhancing the security of modern energy services for the poor; and (b) the contribution of renewable energy technologies to progress towards achieving the MDGs.
