SCALA Programme
Sustainable Agriculture in Argentina
What’s it about
Launched in 2020, the Scaling up Climate Ambition on Land use and Agriculture (SCALA) programme is a global initiative that aims to encourage the sustainable use of land in agricultural production. To achieve this goal, participating countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) are taken as starting points towards the implementation of environmental solutions that have the potential to generate dynamic changes within their productive systems.
The program is financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) through its International Climate Initiative (IKI) and it’s implemented in a joint collaboration between the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The three main objectives this initiative aims to fulfill are:
• Enhanced capacity to identify and appraise innovative and transformative climate-sensitive agriculture and land use actions into NDCs
• Strengthened national and sectoral plans and budgets to integrate agriculture and land use sectors' climate-related priorities
• Increased climate action in agriculture and land use through stronger mobilization of private sector engagement and finance
SCALA Programme in Argentina
Argentina’s agriculture is highly innovative and has a lot to offer in terms of sustainable solutions that prove beneficial to producers as well as the environment. There’s great potential to scale up these types of measures, leading to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening of the industry’s resilience, thus improving its productivity.
This way, SCALA is supporting Argentina’s agricultural transition by optimizing their productive models in land use (corn) and livestock farming, promoting innovative low carbon models and productive practices that increase its efficiency and access to sustainable markets.
The program focuses its work on the Pampas region, one of the most important productive sites within the country. By implementing adaptation and mitigation measures at a regional level, SCALA is helping Argentina build an evidence-based case in favor of the implementation of an innovative climate-sensitive model that could be replicated in other regions of the country.
