Call for Stakeholder Feedback on Environmental and Social Safeguards
August 20, 2025
In Kalumbila’s Meheba and Kaoma’s Mayukwayukwa Settlements, communities long hoped for better roads, schools and reliable water. To answer this call, UNDP Zambia launched the Development of Basic Infrastructure in Settlements for Displaced Persons and their Host Communities project supported by the Government of Japan. The project’s core objectives are improving livelihoods by fostering inclusive economic opportunities and enhancing access to critical social services, including healthcare, education and safe water.
In both Mayukwayukwa and Meheba the project aims to construct and rehabilitate specific basic infrastructure like Roads, Foot Crossing Points, Secondary schools, Staff Houses, irrigation schemes and water reticulation systems in selected administrative Blocks of the settlement
The project, scheduled to run from 2025 to 2027, targets the Mayukwayukwa Resettlement Scheme in Kaoma District and the Meheba Resettlement Scheme in Kalumbila District, addressing urgent needs for forcibly displaced persons and their host communities while promoting long-term sustainability within the two areas.
To safeguard the environment, UNDP prepared Environmental and Social Management Plans and Assessments for both sites. But before the first brick could be laid, the voices of the people matter. In view of this, UNDP Zambia is inviting stakeholders to submit comments on the Prepared report for consideration for proposed construction works.
