The Inclusive and Democratic Governance Portfolio in Türkiye focuses on strengthening governance processes and supporting the development of institutions that are responsive to citizens’ demands and universal norms. The Programme addresses structural issues pertaining to the rule of law and human rights including with respect to gender, participation and accountability while working in partnership with public and international institutions, as well as Civil Society Organizations.

In this manner, support is provided to the relevant institutions to enable improved access to justice and to enhance implementation of local administration reforms in line with the subsidiarity principle.

Democratic governance is crucial for human development. Institutions, rules and standards, and participatory inclusive political processes play an important role in whether countries experience economic growth, whether governing structures are responsive and whether women are empowered.

Promotion of access to justice through increased efficiency of judicial systems by policy recommendations for organizational administration structure and development of mediation practice in the field of criminal justice is one the high priority fields of UNDP’s cooperation with the government. UNDP also supports government in the engagement of vulnerable groups to policy making such as the internally displaced people to find durable solutions. Similarly, women empowerment is at the core of UNDP’s initiatives. Incorporation of gender mainstreaming to all interventions is a priority for the democratic governance technical assistance.

Support is provided to the relevant institutions to enable improved access to justice and to enhance implementation of local administration reforms in line with the subsidiarity principle.
Building on past record of impartiality, promotion of innovation in governance, and the UN’s role as a guardian of international norms, UNDP contributes to strengthening the independence of institutions, particularly judicial actors and national human rights mechanisms.
