UNDP Participates in World Health Day Activities

On Sunday 15th May 2022, The UN Agencies in Suriname under the leadership of PAHO/WHO and the Ministry of Health of Suriname organized a mini-Fair and Walk at Fort Zelandia in the capital city of Paramaribo.  The theme for World Health Day 2022 is Our Planet, Our Health.

This activity called “Wan Gusontu Libi’ (a healthy life) was organized by PAHO/WHO with the coordination assistance of the Resident Coordinator’s Office, engaging all UN Agencies in country, as part of the celebration of the World Health Day in Suriname.

The purpose of the “Wan Gusontu Libi’ Mini-Fair and Walk was to raise awareness amongst the general public, on actions that can be taken to improve people’s health as well as the health of the planet.  and therefore, to contribute to creating a better society focused on wellbeing.

UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Ms. Margaret Jones Williams participated actively in the fair, giving a speech on the work of the UN and UNDP towards health and a healthy plane, as well as sharing information in the UNDP booth. SDG13 - Climate Action, SDG14 - Life Below Water and SDG15 - Life on Land were the theme of the exhibition of the UNDP booth. (Photo credit: JM/UNDP, May 2022).

During the event the visitors had the opportunity to obtain Information on a heathy lifestyle and taking care of the planet. Information was presented in the  booths of the UN agencies and the Ministry of Health. The UNDP booth had information from some of our key projects in environment and climate change, showcasing UNDP’s contribution to a healthy planet and actions towards achievement of SDG 13, 14 and 15 while integrating SDG 5.

Participants to the event also, had the opportunity to  participate in painting activities and to join a 5-K  walk through the  city with different fitness challenges along the route.

Staff of the Bureau of Public Health were available in their booth, distributing face masks, administering COVID-19 vaccines and doing blood pressure measurement for the General public.
