Potential Impact of the War in Ukraine on South Sudan Economy

The war in Ukraine threatens to devastate the economies of many developing countries. The war has already caused imaginable suffering and is also deepening existing vulnerabilities and inequalities across the globe.
But how will this war affect the economy of the world’s youngest nation? To answer this, UNDP in South Sudan has prepared a policy brief on the potential impact of the war in Ukraine on the economy of South Sudan.
The findings show that like many other countries, South Sudan will feel the effect of the war in several ways, especially in increased food and fuel prices. But there is a silver lining in every dark cloud. Given South Sudan’s dependence on oil, a positive impact is inadvertently possible through increased fiscal space arising out of a global rise in the oil price.
