Successful Conclusion of of the Mobile Court for Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Cases at the Juba Central Prisons

Juba, 7 November 2025 — The Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Mobile Court, established at Juba National Prison by the Judiciary of South Sudan on the 23rd of September 2025 with support from UNDP, Kingdom of Netherlands and partners, has successfully concluded its operations, marking a significant milestone in South Sudan’s pursuit of justice, gender equality, and judicial reform.
GBV remains one of the most urgent human rights challenges in South Sudan, with survivors facing barriers such as delays, stigma, and limited access to justice. The mobile court was launched to address these issues by providing a dedicated, accessible platform for prompt, fair, and sensitive.
Representatives of the Judiciary, the South Sudan National Prisons Service, UNDP Team and other partners following the proceedings at the launch of the Mobile GBV court adjudication of a total of 129 GBV cases in 40 days. Its dual objective was to deliver justice for survivors and alleviate congestion in Juba National Prison by reducing pre-trial detention periods.
Key Outcomes of the Mobile Court:
• Cases Completed: A total of [60] GBV cases have been concluded through the court’s proceedings, ensuring survivors receive timely justice.
• Beneficiaries: Over [60] survivors have benefitted directly from the court’s interventions, gaining access to justice and legal support.
• Inmates Released on Bail: The court facilitated the release of [62] inmates on bail, contributing to decongesting the prison and improving detainee treatment.
The successful implementation of the mobile court underscores the importance of innovative justice solutions in addressing GBV and strengthening the rule of law in South Sudan. It exemplifies the government’s commitment to protecting women and girls and ensures that justice is accessible, efficient, and fair. UNDP, with the support of The Kingdom of Netherlands and partners, remains dedicated to supporting justice sector reforms that advance human rights, gender equality, and security sector reforms in South Sudan.
