The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP), implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), provides financial and technical support to civil society organizations (CSOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), cooperatives, and grassroots groups. The programme empowers local communities to take collective action to address global environmental challenges while enhancing local livelihoods and promoting inclusive and sustainable development.

Under Operational Phase 8 (OP8), the SGP in Rwanda is implementing a landscape-based approach that promotes integrated solutions to interrelated environmental and socio-economic issues.

Rweru Sector in Bugesera District has been selected as the priority landscape due to its ecological sensitivity, socio-economic vulnerability, and high potential for transboundary and regional impact, particularly in areas related to wetland conservation, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience. In alignment with the OP8 Global Strategic Initiatives, interventions outside the selected landscape will enhance community engagement for the ecosystem-based restoration of the Nyungwe-Ruhango corridor project, a GEF 8 medium-sized project

This Call for Proposals seeks to identify and support innovative community-driven projects that align with the OP8 strategic priorities and contribute to Rwanda’s national development and environmental goals, including the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), the Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy, and the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP).
