In one of Kigali's affluent suburbs, Nyiraneza (name disguised) is a busy middle-aged mother of a toddler who works from 8 to 5. Every day, before heading to the office, Nyiraneza would faithfully lock her bedroom door to protect her valuables such as jewelry, money, and gadgets.
Ironically, Nyiraneza always left her two-year-old son under the care of her house-help, who already had full-time responsibilities for care of the house and had no training in childcare. She considered this arrangement normal until one rainy morning when her helper asked her why she was more concerned about her prized possessions than her own son. It was in that moment that Nyiraneza realized she had misplaced her priorities all along.
What defines value in society?
Nyiraneza’s story raises important questions about where we place our value in society. There is a misconception that monetary wealth defines importance in our communities. When we view life solely through a monetary lens, we lose sight of what truly matters—such as the essential role of childcare, elderly care, and empowering persons with disabilities. This is where Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) come in, said United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative Mr. Maxwell Gomera speaking.
At the event held on May 12th, 2023, over 50 organizations showcased their societal impact in areas such as healthcare, disability services, youth empowerment, and environmental protection. The Exhibition was part of the week-long celebration of over 2,000 CSOs in Rwanda who serve as the voice of the voiceless.
CSOs focus on what is important
CSOs play a pivotal role in addressing the critical needs of society. For example, they work tirelessly to reduce teenage pregnancies, provide hope to victims of early parenthood, and care for individuals affected by diseases like Alzheimer's.
"CSOs are on the ground, working with vulnerable communities and reawakening the spirit of compassion, empathy, and solidarity. Let's value and support them," Mr. Gomera emphasized.
CSOs complement governments and businesses by providing vital services and support to those in need. They understand the unique challenges faced by vulnerable populations and tailor uplifting solutions.
"CSOs are key partners in Rwanda's journey towards sustainable development. We are committed to strengthening collaborations between the government and civil society actors to fast-track national development," reiterated Dr. Usta Ncusta, CEO of the Rwanda Governance Board, at the CSO exhibition event.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is dedicated to continue supporting Civil Society Organizations, for a positive impact on wider communities. It is not the size of our bank accounts that defines us, but the depth of our compassion and the impact we have on the lives of others.
