UNDP engages with the UN human rights mechanisms including the Special Procedures, the Treaty Bodies and the Universal Periodic Review in a complementary way as they provide important guidance on human rights for sustainable development.

As part of their mandates established by the Human Rights Council, special procedures, examine, advise and publicly report on human rights issues and situations. Special procedures mandate holders support UNDP across their respective mandates and vice versa. In 2020, Special procedures mandate holders provided rapid guidance immediately following the global onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The timely guidance and joint statements on key human rights elements and risks in relation to the pandemic helped inform UNDP response, such as the UNDP-OHCHR-DCO Checklist for a Human Rights-based Approach to socio-economic response which was developed and rolled-out across the UN system.

UNDP’s dynamic engagement with the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights has been critical to UNDP’s growing portfolio of support to the realization of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a key mechanism of the Human Rights Council. All UN member States participate to the review of their human rights records by their peers. Recommendations given in the UPR mechanism are also key to advance sustainable development with human rights at their core. Along with recommendations from Treaty Bodies, they can be used for action, advocacy and as a source of information.  UNDP engages with the UPR process and utilizes UPR recommendations as an entry point for national policies advancing sustainable development and action on human rights.
