The workshop marks the beginning of a nationwide consultation process that will be held over the next three weeks as part of the review and update of Papua New Guinea’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), as well as the validation of the country’s 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The Southern Region workshop brings together representatives from government agencies, provincial administrations, and civil society organizations from the National Capital District, Central, Gulf, Milne Bay, Oro, and Western provinces to contribute to this important national process.

Through the workshop, participants are discussing and identifying key environmental and biodiversity challenges facing their provinces and communities, while contributing ideas, priorities, and solutions that will help shape and guide national biodiversity conservation action over the coming years.
Opening the workshop, CEPA Acting Deputy Managing Director, Mr. Alu Kaiye highlighted the importance of ensuring that voices from across the country are reflected in the updated strategy.
“The validation of the Seventh National Report and the review of our National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan are critical steps in ensuring that Papua New Guinea’s biodiversity priorities are informed by stakeholders across the country. These consultations provide an important opportunity for all stakeholders to contribute to a shared vision for conserving our natural heritage,” he said.

Papua New Guinea became a Party to the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1993 and has since developed and updated its National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan to respond to emerging environmental challenges and global commitments. The current review seeks to align the country’s biodiversity goals with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, a landmark international agreement adopted in 2022 that aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 and achieve a world living in harmony with nature by 2050.
The Port Moresby workshop is the first of four regional consultations. Similar workshops will be held in Mt Hagen, Lae and Kokopo, ensuring that stakeholders from all regions of Papua New Guinea have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the NBSAP 2025–2030 and review the findings of the country’s 7th National Report.
Over the coming weeks, participants will help identify priority actions, review national biodiversity targets, and strengthen the country’s approach to conserving ecosystems, protecting species, and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources.
The outcomes from the regional consultations will contribute to the finalization of Papua New Guinea’s updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and its 7th National Report.
