UNDP supports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police to deliver specialized trainings to 2000 police personnel of Merged Districts

Khyber, 05 December 2022 – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police commenced trainings for former Khasadars and Levies on specialized courses in core policing functions. The trainings are being delivered under the European Union (EU) funded, ‘Deliver Justice Project’ at Police Training School in Shakas, Khyber District, also operationalized with support from the EU. The trainings aim to upskill former Khasadars and Levies integrated into the KP Police following the merger of former federally administered tribal areas (FATA) with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2017.

Under the ‘Deliver Justice Project’, over the next two years, UNDP and KP Police aim to train 2000 former Khasadars and Levies from merged areas out of which, 650  personnel will be trained in 2022.

The overall training programme aims to develop professional policing skills amongst former Khasadars and Levies over a ten-day residential course duration. The training curriculum includes basic investigation skills, public disorder and riot management, gender-responsive policing, and community policing.

The first batch of former Khasadars and Levies completed their training on 2 December 2022. Chief Guest at the training Capt. (R) Feroze Shah, PSP, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Directorate of Training, KP Police thanked UNDP and the EU for their support. Capt. (R) Feroze Shah said at the occasion, “Regular policing is a new concept in merged areas and continuous capacity building is required to bring former Khasadars and Levies at par with their peers from districts other than merged areas.”

Dr Quraish Khan, Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Directorate of Training, KP Police who attended the certificate distribution ceremony, highlighted, “Earlier this year, KP Police reached a milestone by training 25,000  former Khasadars and Levies in basic policing skills as they were integrated into the regular KP Police service. The specialized trainings that we are delivering now in partnership with UNDP and the EU will add value to our ongoing efforts to restore, strengthen, and improve the formal security and justice system in merged areas which is relatively new to that region.”

 

 

Mr Bilal Khan Khattak, Project Officer (Training), UNDP Rule of Law Programme who was present at the event reiterated, “Supporting KP Police in building the capacity of former Khasadars and Levies is key to improving police service delivery in the merged areas and to better serve and protect the citizens in this region. UNDP remains committed to promoting and undertaking initiatives to  support stronger security sector governance in merged areas of KP.” He also thanked the EU for their continuous support and appreciated KP Police for their tireless efforts.
