Socio-Economic Impact Assessment of COVID-19 in Fiji

Socio-Economic Impact Assessment of COVID-19 in Fiji

September 9, 2020

The assessment is guided by the UN Secretary General’s Framework for the Immediate Socio-Economic Response to COVID-19, which sets out the framework for the UN’s urgent socio-economic support to countries and societies in the face of COVID-19, putting in practice the UN Secretary-General’s Shared Responsibility, Global Solidarity report on the same subject.

It is one of three critical components of the UN’s efforts to save lives, protect people, and rebuild better, alongside the health response, led by the World Health Organization through the Joint Incident Management Team, and the humanitarian response, as detailed in the UN-led Pacific Humanitarian Response Plan.

The assessment has focused on a series of in-depth assessments guided by the Framework for the Immediate Socio-Economic Response to COVID-19, analysing actual and potential losses for Fiji’s economy and vulnerable groups as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It also analyses the magnitude and nature of impact on selected sectors and population groups which are disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, and recommends the most effective policy interventions to address the impact of COVID-19.
