A mosaic of womanhood – Capturing diverse realities of women's experiences

Businesswomen, tourist workers, farmers, women in administrative professions, politicians, mothers, housewives — Women and girls shape our world daily, through both celebrated achievements and quiet acts of resilience. Here's a glimpse into the breadth of the influence of eight women, dedicated to the International Women’s day – 8th of March.

In the small town of Sv. Nikole, talented fashion engineer Martina Milanova is making a significant impact. Her textile factory, employing over 40 other women, is a testament to her passion and entrepreneurial spirit. With support from a 'green grant for green investments,' she's now integrating new technologies to enhance her firm’s competitiveness in the global market. Notably, women, despite representing 35% of entrepreneurs supported by active labor measures, remain underrepresented in the broader labor market.

In the heart of the Prespa region, resilience blossoms. Rural women, facing daily challenges, rise to become catalysts for change. Through collaboration and learning, they are redefining their community, proving their strength and leadership. Violeta Prculovska, from “Rural Women of Prespa” Organization, works hard to break stereotypes, enabling women to contribute to their communities and support their families in new and meaningful ways.

Recognizing women as vital drivers of economic growth, the Employment Service Agency (ESA) actively designs and implements programs to enhance their employability and labor market participation. Led by Violeta Stojanovic - Head of the active labour programme unit and the team – the Employment Agency strives for equal opportunities, through strategic employment initiatives, despite ongoing local and global  challenges.

“Sharing the beauty of Prespa with others is my passion”, says Rumjana Gorgievska - a dedicated woman from the region's hospitality industry. As a pioneering woman in Prespa's tourism sector, she's not only expanding her small business but also shaping the region's future in prosperous and sustainable way.

Ankica Sokolic from Skopje is a climate justice activist whose education and advocacy focus on climate change, energy, and policy-making, with a particular emphasis on procedural justice. Women make up for 76% fewer workers than men in the energy sector, and only one in five leadership roles are held by women? Despite this, women are disproportionately affected by issues like energy poverty. These realities drive Ankica’s advocacy for more inclusive decision-making, highlighting the importance of a gender lens in creating sustainable policies.

Development of local self-government would be impossible without dedicated people that work on continual improvements to overcome practical challenges and address emerging governance needs. Arbresha Vlashi, project coordinator at the Centre for development of the Southwest planning region and president of the Council of the municipality of Struga is a powerful  example of how both women and people with disabilities can be the driving force of the local development, breaking barriers and inspiring change.

Recognizing women as key agents of change in household and community decision-making is essential for improving air quality and combating climate change in North Macedonia. Irena Lozanovska Panchevska is among the pioneers of the green transition, promoting the use of energy-efficient technologies. She inspires us, as she leads by example in creating a more sustainable future. People with disabilities make up 5.14% of the population, and it is society’s responsibility to support these households, including Irena’s.

Starting from a simple kindergarten, Vesna Gabeloska from CSO VOPS in Ohrid grew this small initiative into a daily center for children with cerebral palsy and other disabilities, becoming a vital resource for both the children and their families. Her inspiring work not only provides crucial support, helping the children thrive and access opportunities they might not otherwise have, but also offers a space for parents to connect, support each other, and discuss their experiences.
