Abuja, Nigeria, 1 April 2026 – The Federal Government of Nigeria, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is set to launch a nationwide network of University Innovation Pods (UniPods) - a landmark initiative positioning Nigeria at the forefront of Africa’s innovation and digital transformation agenda. The national rollout will be officially flagged off on 7 April 2026 at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where His Excellency, Vice President Kashim Shettima, will inaugurate the AI UniPod - a flagship hub for artificial intelligence, digital innovation, and future-ready skills.

Nigeria becomes the first country in Africa to scale UNDP’s timbuktoo innovation model through direct government co-investment - marking a decisive shift from pilot initiatives to a nationally owned innovation system.

The UniPods are a core delivery platform under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, translating bold economic reforms into tangible outcomes in:

• Job creation 

• Youth empowerment 

• Innovation and digital transformation 

• Industrialisation and economic diversification 

Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Sen. Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, who disclosed this on Wednesday during a news conference in Abuja, said the UNIPOD initiative "underscores the Federal Government's commitment to repositioning our universities as drivers of economic growth, innovation, and enterprise development, addressing the disconnect between formal education and labour market outcomes. "The UniPods are designed to address this by providing structured platforms within our universities where ideas can be developed, tested. financed, and translated into viable enterprises for societal impact and economic development," he added

The AI UniPod at UNILAG serves as the national flagship, anchoring Nigeria’s ambition to lead in:

• Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies 

• Digital skills and talent development 

• Startup incubation and venture creation 

It represents a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future as a global hub for digital talent and innovation.

Following the UNILAG launch, UniPods will be commissioned across key regions - each aligned to priority sectors:

• Nasarawa State University, Keffi – Mining Technology & Resource Innovation 

• University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom – Green & Blue Economy 

• Michael Okpara University, Umudike (Abia) – Manufacturing & Trade 

• Benue State University, Makurdi – Agriculture & Food Systems 

• University of Maiduguri – Resilience & Recovery Innovation 

Together, these hubs form the first integrated national innovation network spanning all geo-political zones 

All facilities are fully equipped with modern infrastructure, high-speed connectivity, alternative energy solutions, and trained operational teams, enabling immediate activation. 

With over 60% of its population under 25, Nigeria is one of the world’s most dynamic talent economies. The UniPods are designed to convert this demographic potential into:

• Scalable enterprises 

• Market-ready innovations 

• High-quality jobs 

By enabling pathways from research to market, and from ideas to enterprises, the initiative strengthens Nigeria’s competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global economy.

The UniPods reflect a whole-of-government effort, involving:

• Federal Ministry of Education 

• Ministry of Finance 

• Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning 

• Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy 

• TETFund 

This model demonstrates a new approach: Government-led. Government-financed. Partnership-enabled.

UNDP Nigeria Resident Representative Ms. Elsie G. Attafuah stated: “Nigeria is showing that when governments lead and co-invest, innovation can scale as a national system - connecting universities, industry, and capital into a powerful engine for growth and prosperity.”

The Federal Government and UNDP are advancing a national investment framework to scale UniPods nationwide. The ambition includes:

• Expansion to 50+ universities 

• 500,000+ youth trained in advanced digital and innovation skills 

• Thousands of startups and enterprises supported 

• Mobilisation of private and development finance into innovation ecosystems 

The UniPods are part of a wider national push to build a complete innovation ecosystem, including:

• Community Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centres 

• MSME acceleration and export readiness platforms 

• Digital public infrastructure and GovTech transformation 

• UNDP Innovation Centre and Timbuktoo Fintech Hub in Lagos 

The Federal Government and UNDP call on: Private sector leaders, Development finance institutions, Foundations and global partners, State governments, and all Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to join in scaling this initiative into a national platform for innovation, enterprise, and investment.
