Germany and UNDP Strengthen Partnership for Peace and Stability in Northern Mozambique
October 29, 2025
Maputo, 24 October 2025 – On the occasion of United Nations Day, marking 80 years of the UN’s founding, the Government of Germany and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Mozambique renewed their partnership to promote peace, stability, and resilience in the north of the country.
At a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MINEC), the German Embassy and UNDP Mozambique signed a new agreement worth EUR 2 million in support of the Programme for the Stabilization of Northern Mozambique. The German contribution will further strengthen efforts to consolidate peace and social cohesion in conflict-affected areas, particularly in Cabo Delgado province, where communities continue to recover from the impacts of violence and displacement.

“This renewed partnership underscores our shared commitment to building lasting peace and improving the lives of people in northern Mozambique,” said Edo Stork, UNDP Resident Representative. “Together with Germany, we are investing in the foundations of recovery — security, infrastructure, and livelihoods — to help communities rebuild with dignity and hope.”
The Programme for the Stabilization of Northern Mozambique focuses on three key areas:
- Security and rule of law, to strengthen community safety and protect populations;
- Infrastructure rehabilitation, to enable access to essential services; and
- Socio-economic recovery, to expand livelihood opportunities and resilience among affected populations.
Since its inception, the programme has supported the rehabilitation of public facilities, including schools, markets, health centres, and administrative offices; facilitated community dialogues to promote reconciliation and trust-building; and provided livelihood support to thousands of households rebuilding their lives in resettled areas.
“Stabilization is not only about rebuilding infrastructure — it is about restoring trust and opportunity,” added Edo Stork. “By supporting local governance, economic inclusion, and social cohesion, we are helping communities lay the groundwork for a peaceful and sustainable future.”
Germany’s continued support complements the broader efforts of Mozambique’s partners and the United Nations to promote peace, recovery, and sustainable development in Cabo Delgado and the northern region.
The signing took place as part of the celebrations of UN Day 2025, which this year commemorates 80 years of the United Nations working globally to promote peace, human rights, and sustainable development.
