In the remote hill village of Deppochari Para, Sapchari Union, Rangamati, over 360 residents from 92 families once faced severe water scarcity. Streams would dry up in the dry season, and during monsoons, available water turned muddy and unsafe. The burden of fetching water fell heavily on women and children, leading to increased health risks and daily hardship.

Amidst this challenge, a group of climate-vulnerable youth, led by Sobin Chakma, rose to the occasion under the LoGIC Project’s PBCRG Scheme. With support from the local Union Parishad and the community, they helped design and implement a solar-powered, ring-well-based water purification and supply system.

From conducting site feasibility surveys and securing landowner consent to verifying construction materials and volunteering manual labor, youth played a hands-on role in every step. During devastating floods, Sobin’s real-time reporting and quality checks prevented project delays and protected community safety.

An Operation & Maintenance Committee, formed with active youth participation, now oversees monthly contributions (50 BDT per household), bank account management, and system upkeep. Trained in technical operation and health awareness, these young leaders also run hygiene sessions for villagers, promoting safe practices.

“This project proved that when youth are trusted with responsibility, they don’t just help build infrastructure—they build healthier, more resilient communities,” said Sobin Chakma.

Today, waterborne disease rates have dropped by 60%, and women no longer walk miles for clean water. Recognized as a model by local authorities, the Sapchari initiative shows how youth leadership, local knowledge, and climate resilience can create lasting change—even in the most remote regions.
