Niue Set to Host National Energy Summit to Chart Path to a Sustainable Energy Future

Niue is getting ready to host the National Energy Summit, designed as an inclusive platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange and partnership building.

Alofi, NIUE – The Ministry of Infrastructure, Government of Niue, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through its Samoa Multi-Country Office, will host the Niue National Energy Summit 2025 from 7–8 July at the Matavai Resort in Alofi.

The Summit will bring together government leaders, Members of Parliament, village councils, private sector representatives, development partners, and community stakeholders to shape a shared vision for Niue’s energy future and chart priorities for the country’s next Energy Roadmap to 2035.

Honourable Dalton Tagelagi, Prime Minister of Niue, will launch the event, which is designed as an inclusive platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and partnership building.

“Niue is making an important progress in expanding renewable energy and strengthening energy security, but this is a journey that requires collective leadership,” said Ms. Aliona Niculita, UNDP Resident Representative for Samoa, Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau. “This Summit is an opportunity to build on existing achievements and co-create a roadmap that is resilient, inclusive, and economically sustainable.”

Over two days, participants will explore topics including:
•    Policy and regulatory readiness for renewable energy integration
•    Innovative business models and access to climate finance
•    Digital solutions for energy monitoring and accountability, including the launch of the Niue Energy Information Platform
•    Community engagement and inclusion of youth, women, and persons with disabilities.

The event will also showcase Niue’s progress to date, including demonstration projects such as:
•    Installation of new transformers to strengthen grid stability
•    Pilot deployment of solar water pumps to support livelihoods
•    LED streetlighting to improve energy efficiency, and
•    Niue’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Building Skills for Implementation
Following the high-level Summit, an additional two days of training and capacity-building workshops (9–10 July) will equip national stakeholders with practical tools and skills to accelerate implementation. The workshops will cover topics such as:
•    Integrated energy development planning and implementation
•    Renewable energy integration and grid management
•    Energy audit systems and best practices for public facilities
•    Strategies for inclusive energy transition and stakeholder engagement.

These sessions are designed to ensure that Niue’s energy transition is not only visionary but also technically strong, locally owned, and operationally ready.

The Summit and training programme reflect Niue’s commitment to achieving its target of 80% renewable-based electricity generation by 2025 and contributing to its Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement.
