Promoting Peace and Inclusive Development in the Borderland Counties of Northeastern Kenya

The Promoting Peace project actively drives inclusive governance and strengthens social accountability mechanisms in Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera at the local level. By piloting a transformative model for community engagement and participation in human security and development initiatives, the project enhances both the effectiveness and sustainability of these efforts. It builds trust between communities and security actors through Civil Security Cooperation (CISEC) and implements strategic ‘peace dividends’ livelihood micro-projects.

Recognizing the gap in granular, disaggregated data, the project establishes and strengthens inclusive data collection, sharing, and management systems at both county and national levels. This approach enables the collection, analysis, and management of county-specific disaggregated data, paving the way for more data-informed programming in the future. By addressing the needs of those at risk of being left behind, the project ensures more inclusive development.

The project complements other interventions in Northeast Kenya led by the Northeast Partnership/Advisory Group and the World Bank’s Northeast Development Initiative (NEDI). It enhances collaboration, coordination, and inclusivity among actors implementing projects under the larger NEDI framework. Additionally, the project provides NEDI stakeholders with crucial linkages to community-level structures and access to reporting and analysis, ensuring that their planning and implementation are aligned with the needs and priorities of the communities they serve.
